D. auratus are colourful and generally non-aggressive poison dart frogs. They are normally great in groups all of their lives, any aggression is usually minor. Of course, watching for any sign of stress is important and pulling a frog frog the group if it is showing signs of stress (ie losing weight).
We find auratus to be shy and slowly get bolder with age. A lot of leaf litter and a well planted vivarium allows them to feel more secure to come out of hiding.
They are found near water (streams/ponds) in nature and seem to appreciate a water feature in their vivarium.
Although auratus are generally great group frogs, females may eat each others eggs or males and females may get into the odd tussle but tend to work it out.
Breeders often only keep breeding pairs together, but in general, they are able to live out their lives in a group of their own kind without much trouble.
Naturalistic terrariums are best for all dart frogs and the same goes for auratus. They also seem to appreciate a water feature and if they feel threatened they may drive under water and hide for several minutes. We never had deep ponds in our vivariums because dart frogs aren't great swimmers and sometimes have trouble getting out.
Humidity should be kept over 70%. Temperature should be kept between 22-27 C (78-82 F) in the daytime and can drop as low as 20 C (68 F) at night. They are heat sensitive and will die if overheated, temperatures over 29 C (85 F) are dangerous.
We feed supplement dusted flightless fruit flies and their cages are seeded with springtails, which they love to hunt for and eat. They are able to eat other small foods, such as, pinhead crickets and bean or rice flour beetles.
They reach sexual maturity as early as 10-12 months of age. The male's call is a quiet buzz. The female will lay her eggs (3 to 8 eggs) on flat smooth leaves or on a petri dish under a coco hut every 10-21 days.
The eggs hatch after about 2 weeks. Full adult colour patterns on the froglets take about 6-8 months to develop.
Adult females are approximately 3.8 to 5.1 cm (1 1/2 to 2 inches) long and males are slightly smaller. They have a captive life span of around 10 years, although there are records of them living into their 20's.
Currently we are working with Costa Rican Green & Black, Microspot, and Super Blue.
In summary, these are a beautiful, easily kept and bred frog, a little shy but with lots of cover they become bolder over time.
